Diffrient World

High Performance. Ultimate Simplicity. Diffrient World is Humanscale's first foray into all-mesh task seating. Designer Niels Diffrient wanted to create the most minimal, full-function task chair ever made. With an innovative tri-panel mesh backrest that provides custom back and lumbar support and a lightweight design, Diffrient World is, like all of Humanscale’s products, simple, beautiful and functional. The design eliminates the need for traditional mechanisms, instead using the laws of physics and the sitter’s body weight to offer perfect recline for each individual sitter. Diffrient World offers the ultimate user-friendly sitting experience.

Build Quality

Build Quality

Drawing inspiration from the three dimensional approach tailors take when creating men’s suits, Niels Diffrient wanted to build a minimal mesh task chair with a back that automatically fits the user. He collaborated with textile designer Elizabeth Whelan to create a flexible but strong non-stretch mesh, so the backrest would take on the shape of the sitter. He also wanted World to be minimal but highly functional, so he worked to eliminate tension mechanisms, knobs and adjustment levers. The result is a task chair that is simple but beautiful, supporting each user instantly and changing the way people sit.

Upholstery Options

Upholstery Options

The Diffrient World Quick Ship comes in 3 different textile options. The mesh featured on all of these chairs is low-abrasion mesh that protects your clothing. One of the quick ship chairs comes in Corde4 fabric for the seat, and Monofilament Stripe for the back. Designed with a four-way stretch, Corde 4 is made up of a detailed weave structure. Monofilament Stripe is made specifically for tri-panel, mesh back chairs and is made of a strong elastic. Another chair is upholstered entirely of the Catena mesh. Catena has a pure, perfected weave to fit well in modern offices. Then there is the chair upholstered completely in Pinstripe mesh. Pinstripe was inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge and is made of two monofilament stretch yarns. The pattern features thin stripes of black.

Back Comfort

The backrest has a built-in curve for your lumbar area. The curve in the back is very pronounced and the mesh is really flexible. The tri-panel mesh backrest creates three different zones in the backrest, which helps to conform to the specific person that is sitting in the chair. The mesh allows you to sink into the back and then the pressure of the mesh flexing will provide the support you need. This backrest features an extra pivot motion that automatically adjusts to the changing needs of your spine. This gives your chair a bit of wiggle so it will adjust to your back position, without you having to recline.

Seat Comfort

Seat Comfort

The seat on the Diffrient World has a frameless front edge that eliminates contact stress behind the knee. The waterfall edge offers long-term comfort, and also provides weight distribution. The wide seat makes it feel very spacious. The mesh upholstered seat doesn’t have much flex in the mesh to help create body-fitting contours. The fabric upholstered seat is padded with foam which provides the user with a cushion that closely follows the body’s shape.

The Diffrient World chair was purposely designed with only a few functions. The idea behind the chair is to have a minimalist design that requires only a couple adjustments for you to be comfortable. Humanscale wants you to be able to get in the chair and be comfortable and ready to work right away. The Diffrient World chair comes standard with two adjustments: seat height and seat depth. When you recline the backrest, the seat moves but it does not keep you in the same position to simply rock back. Instead, it pushes the back of the seat up. The idea is to open your hips as you recline, which is thought to be an improved posture to the standard rocking motion.

Humanscale covers the Diffrient World chair for 15 years. The warranty covers the chair for 24/7 usage and for people up to 300 lbs. The upholstery, foam and arm pads are an exception to this coverage. They have a coverage period of five years and are covered for usage periods of eight hours a day and 40 hours a week. One aspect about Humanscale’s warranty, that separates them from a lot of other brands, is they will make on-site repairs for you, if you are located near a Humanscale authorized dealer.

About the Diffrient World

"If every chair was made the way the World Chair was, we would cut in half all the material used for task chairs." - Niels Diffrient, Designer. Diffrient was inspired by the three dimensional lines used to create men's suits, so he created a chair with a back that would fit any user. He collaborated with Elizabeth Whelan to create a strong, flexible mesh that would take the shape of the person in the chair. Diffrient wanted the World to be minimal but also highly functional.
