7 Most Comfortable Office Chair Backrests Video
Over a six-week period, a team of ten users at BTOD tested 34 popular models of office chairs for seat comfort. Each participant spent four hours working in each individual chair and at the end of the period gave it a score for seat comfort, as well as other categories. These scores were then averaged to give an overall seat comfort score for each chair. This list covers the top seven chairs scored for seat comfort.
Leap v2 Starting Price: $899.00
Our highest rated backrest of the group, the Steelcase Leap v2, only received two scores of 70 or less, while the rest of the ratings came in at 80 or higher. One of the most common remarks made about the backrest was how comfortable and supportive the natural curve of the backrest is. Another feature that was praised was the multitude of adjustments that can be made to the backrest, ranging from the lumbar tension knob to the height adjustable lumbar. Users who don’t like the pronunciation of lumbar support noted that they recommend removing the height adjustable lumbar system.
Vera Starting Price: $399.00 + Free Shipping
Our former number one pick for back comfort slid down one spot on our list for this year’s ratings. If you’re a fan of mesh, the Eurotech Vera has been rated the most comfortable mesh backrest we’ve tested to date. The natural curve of the backrest is one of the most noticeable features of this chair, offering great lower support without a separate lumbar system. Even users who aren’t a fan of mesh thought the lower lumbar of the Vera was comfortable for them.
Gesture Starting Price: $1,029.00
The Steelcase Gesture gained three points from it’s previous score in 2019. A chair often seen on our lists, some users commented on how they like overall height of the back compered to other Steelcase chairs they tested. Another feature they like about the back was the flexibility and adjustability. While the lumbar support isn’t as pronounced ats the Leap v2, adding the height adjustable lumbar system provides good subtle support for your lower back.
Amia Starting Price: $659.00
As the third Steelcase chair in the top five, it’s clear that users love Steelcase backrests. The consensus with the Amia was that the lumbar system wasn’t overly pronounced, which most users liked. One reviewer noted that they thought the back was too straight, without a real shape that offered proper support. Like the Gesture, this chair features a customizable experience with height adjustment to finely tune the backrest for yourself. The Amia backrest provides more of a floating feel, which comes from the unique LiveLumbar system hidden in the backrest.
Liberty Starting Price: $1,069.00 + Free Shipping
The Humanscale Liberty is the second mesh backrest on our list. It features a three-panel, mesh backrest with a pivot function that moves with you while you’re seated. This pivot function, paired with the natural curve and unique upholstery approach, offers comfortable support. Multiple users of varying physiques mentioned that the backrest fit the natural curve of their back perfectly. Like the Vera, even people who don’t prefer mesh backrests commented on the good support it offered.
Diffrient Starting Price: $1,119.00 + Free Shipping
The next chair is the second Humanscale product to make the list. The Diffrient Smart Chair, like the Liberty, features a three-panel mesh upholstery in the backrest. This design, paired with the form sensing mesh material used, helps offer easy and ongoing support for the lower back. Users mentioned the mesh material felt soft and supportive, while fitting the shape of their backs well. The pivot function in the backrest of this chair makes the lower lumbar support even more noticeable as you push your upper back into the chair.
Aeron Starting Price: $1,395.00
The Herman Miller Aeron may be the most recognizable chair on this list, however the backrest comfort only received two user scores in the 80s, seven scores in the 70s, and one in the 60s. The pellicle mesh upholstery on this chair is the highest quality of the group, but also one of the firmest that we tested. If you like consistent support when you’re reclining, the Aeron’s recline motion keeps the backrest in place through the entire motion. Users who didn’t love the backrest of this chair commented on how they could feel the frame of the chair in their back, which led them to giving it a lower score.
Finding a chair with a proper backrest is very important when deciding what kind of office chair to buy. We tested mesh, poly, fabric, and leather backed chairs so that we could cover all the bases and find our team’s favorite chairs.
