Herman Miller has various types of office and gaming chairs. I have used the Sayl for the last four years and I have to wonder if they were able to make improvements over the original with their gaming line.

1. The Herman Miller Gaming Sayl
Herman Miller released their gaming Sayl chair and I was curious to see if it lived up to a gaming chair standard. It was a neon green and black chair that caught my eye. I was hoping for some fantastic upgrades compared to the original to fit the gaming community. The seat was the first thing I looked at and the gaming chair unfortunately only had 2 seat colors to choose from. The office chair design came in a variety of colors to fit any individual.

To me, the seat isn’t anything too special for a gaming chair. It has a nice cushion and offers support, but nothing we haven’t already seen in other office chairs. The seats are basically the same between the original and the gaming version of the Sayl. They both have the same adjustments and more of a firm seat. The seat may be too small for a larger person too so you want to keep that in mind.

2. Back Support All Day
Next, I want to talk about the backrest. There are some differences on the gaming chair design compared to the original. The backrest itself is the same, but the options that go along with it can be more personal. The gaming Sayl does not come with an added lumbar support like you see on the original which some might not appreciate. However, it seems flimsy and you don’t get a great amount of support anyways, so I don’t think you are missing out on much.

The other major difference the gaming Sayl has to offer is the color choices. There are 6 bright and fun colors that you may like as a gamer. The office design on the other hand comes in your standard colors of black, white and gray.

3. Reclining in the Sayl
Leaning back in the Sayl is a comfortable experience. There is a nice synchro tilt mechanism that gives you good tension control and multiple tilt limiting positions. Now with gaming chairs, most have a deep recline which the Sayl is missing. It features a much smaller range. I am surprised Herman Miller didn’t update the recline when creating this gaming chair.

4. Relaxed Arms
The armrests on the gaming design are no different than the original. It may not be suitable for gamers, but in general offers a great arm package. There is 4-way adjustment with good ranges throughout. There are many positions with the arms so it can fit each individual’s needs. The pads themselves are soft and cushioned well for elbows to sink in. I would say the only negative is the pads don’t lock in place which can cause issues for gamers.

5. Sayl Updated Price
Lastly, with some upgrades comes a higher price. The gaming Sayl is about $120 more than the original. You are basically spending the extra money on the look and color factor. Some people might not see that as worth it. Overall, I don’t see the gaming Sayl really a gaming chair. The features just don’t match up to chairs like the GT Racing Chair. The Sayl has the standard functions of a normal office chair.

Bottom Line
Ultimately, the Sayl is a great chair, but as for the gaming design, it seems a little under rated. There are other gaming chair designs that offer much more for the sole purpose of gaming. This one just doesn’t quite do it for me.
