The Mirra 2 is the 4th Herman Miller chair we have had the opportunity to test. While the Mirra 2 has the lowest price out of the four Herman Miller chairs we have tested, it actually received the highest overall score. We have had the Mirra 2 in our office for several months now. Everyone in our office has used it and I have personally tested it for an extended period of time.
In this review, we will go over our whole experience with the Mirra 2. We will cover everything from the build to the adjustments to the overall comfort to our thoughts on the chair. In the end, we want you to have all of the information possible, ultimately letting you decide if the Mirra 2 is the best ergonomic chair.

The Mirra 2 is a high-end chair so it comes with a higher price point. I will say that you can get the price as low as $1,045 if you go with the most basic option. This will put the price closer to mid range chairs.
The chair has a fully loaded option that will cost more. Our chair, as configured, has a current selling price of $1330. I would recommend holding onto the original packaging until you decide whether you want to keep the chair or not. If you do not have the original packaging, Herman Miller will still work with you to facilitate a return, but having the original box on hand will make it easier.
Warranty
The Mirra 2 comes with a really solid warranty. Herman Miller is currently ranked as our #1 pick for the manufacturer with the best office chair warranties. The Mirra 2 comes with 12 years of coverage on the entire chair. No part of the chair is excluded from the 12 year coverage period.
The coverage is valid for people weighing up to 350 pounds and the warranty also covers 24/7 usage. If something goes wrong with your chair, then you can contact Herman Miller to file a claim. If the parts are easily replaced in the field, then they will be sent at no charge to you. If Herman Miller determines that they need to perform the repairs, then they will either send a technician to your location or pay for your chair to be picked up and returned for repairs.
Shipping
The Mirra 2 ships via ground carrier in a large box that weighs just under 50 lbs. Herman Miller has some handles cut into the sides of the box to make it easier to move but you may want to have someone available to help you move the box to your office.
Herman Miller does a really nice job of packaging their chairs in a way to minimize the material used while also providing great protection for the chair. All four of the Herman Miller chairs we have ordered have had minimal packaging but arrived in perfect condition.
Assembly
One really nice thing about the Mirra 2 is that it arrives fully assembled. The packaging is designed so that you can just roll the chair out of the box. You just need to remove some plastic that protects the chair from being scratched and you are ready to start using it.
It is important to note that there are a few select sellers that may send the chair knocked down. Knocked down means that the chair arrives in several parts and you will need to assemble the chair. Sellers, like Amazon, often do this to save money on shipping costs.
Build Quality
Every Herman Miller chair that has come through our doors has been a high-end product and the Mirra 2 is no different, scoring an 85/100. The Mirra 2 features a unique design that Studio 7.5 spent a ton of time refining and perfecting. The chair has a really nice look and all of the parts fit together seamlessly. You do not have parts that wiggle or have loose connections. Everything is snug and the chair feels solid all around.
The Mirra 2 is made in the USA and each component of the chair is top of the line. The chair is composed mainly from aluminum and plastic, which produces a fairly light task chair at 42 lbs. The base, mechanism and armrest frames are made from aluminum. The backrest, seat frame and armrest shells are all made from custom molded polymid/polyurethane.
The arm pads are foam with a layer of urethane to give them durability. The mesh is a combination of elastomeric and polyester. The mesh is soft and durable, testing at 200,000 double rubs. You can think of a double rub as someone sitting down and then getting up from the chair.
Scope of Users
The Mirra 2 received a decent scope of users score with a 69/100. Scope of users is used to show how much of the population a specific chair model will fit comfortably. The Mirra 2 does a lot of things well. It has a seat range that will fit the 5th to 95th percentile. The chair has a 350 pound weight rating, which is much higher than the 250 pound standard.
The Mirra 2 also has seat depth adjustment, which is crucial for ensuring that a wide range of people can have the correct distance between the back of the legs and front of the chair. The final nice thing about the Mirra 2, when it comes to scope of users, is the arm height adjustment range. They go really low and really high, so they will work for short and tall people.
The one reason why the Mirra 2 didn’t score better is the armrest width. The arms are width adjustable, but they are still wide, even when at their narrowest. The range is about 18.5” – 20.5”. To compare that to a couple other chairs with width adjustment, we can look at the Herman Miller Embody and Steelcase Leap. The Embody’s arms have a range of 11.5” – 21”and the Leap’s arms have a range of 12.75” – 20”. Comparing these ranges shows that the Mirra 2 has wider set arms than average.
Having wider arms can be a limiting factor for shorter people. Ideally, you want your arms to be able to hang freely from your shoulders. If the arms are wider that they should be, then your arms will be at an outward angle, which is not a good ergonomic position.
Seat Comfort
The Mirra 2 features AireWeave™ 2 mesh that is stretched over a plastic frame. The mesh is soft and has great elasticity but the overall feeling of the sit is on the stiffer side. Our office scored the comfort of the seat at 73/100. To score seat comfort, we allowed everyone in our office to sit in the Mirra 2 and then scored it from 1-100. We took the average to get our final number.
A 73 is an average score for the chairs we tested. The seat has a nice contour and it provides good support so there were some people that really liked it. Others did not like the stiffer feeling, the plastic frame and the uncomfortable way your legs rested on it.
Backrest Support
With the Aeron and Cosm both doing well in the back support category, I thought the Mirra 2 would also score well. It actually received a score closer to the average, with a 75/100. Our back support score is calculated the same way as our seat comfort score with everyone in our office weighing in.
The back on the Mirra 2 does a lot of things well. It is large enough to support your entire back. The poly backrest has good breathability and is flexible, so it allows you to move around freely while you work. We opted for the optional adjustable lumbar support and I would highly recommend the add on. It is well worth the upgraded price of $60. It has a 4.5” height adjustment range and 1” of depth adjustment.
Something that is really cool about the lumbar support is that you can control the depth support separately on both sides of your back. This allows you to have one side supported more than the other if that is more comfortable for you. The lumbar add-on covers a large range on your back. The adjustable lumbar support system, paired with the natural contour of the back, really combines to provide nice support for your lower back.
The one main reason why the back didn’t score higher is because of the hard backrest. The poly material gives the chair good flexibility, durability and is easy to clean, but it is hard. If you do not like to rest your back on a hard surface, then I would avoid the TriFlex back and look into the Butterfly back. The Butterfly back merges a fabric layer with the poly. This gives the back a softer feel and is something I would personally opt for if I was buying a Mirra 2 for myself.
Armrest Comfort
The arms on the Mirra 2 are one of the highlights of the chair. We chose the fully adjustable arms, and this is an upgrade that I feel is a must. Fixed arms may be okay for a conference room type of application, but the adjustable arms are really going to help for tasking.
The arms on the Mirra 2 did very well in our comfort tests. With a score of 79/100 they are currently on our list for the top 4 most comfortable arms. This is the final category that we included the opinions of our entire office on. There were a lot of things that people in our office liked about the Mirra 2 arms.
The first thing is their adjustability. They have a massive height range. They can go low enough to be out of the way, but go tall enough for people around 6’4”. The arms pads are width adjustable, depth adjustable and they pivot. This combination of adjustments allows you to put the arms in a ton of different positions, which is great for tasking.
The shape of the arms is also very functional. The front of the arms have a steep waterfall design. This downslope does not make it feel like your arms are sliding forward. There is still plenty of space behind the point where they start to slope. The slope just allows you to put your chair closer to your desk or keyboard tray while still having arm support. You can have your arms on the pads and the slope will keep the pads from hitting your desk.
The final thing that we really liked were the arm pads on the Mirra 2. They are very similar to the arm pads on the Aeron, which were also well liked. The pads are soft and squishy. They feel nice on your arms, but they are not too squishy. They are still supportive. Often times, squishy armrests wear out faster than harder options. The arm pads on the Mirra 2 have a strong urethane membrane to protect them from breaking down prematurely.
There is only one reason why the score wasn’t higher and potentially #1 and that is the width range they offer. The arms are width adjustable, but they are still set pretty wide when you have them all the way in. The shortest people in our office did not like this aspect of the arms.
Ergonomic Adjustments
The overall adjustability of the Mirra 2 is another real highlight of the chair. The Mirra 2 is Herman Miller’s most adjustable office chair. It is only missing one adjustment that we look for on all the chairs we review, back height adjustment. This is mitigated by the adjustable lumbar support option, but it can still be a problem for people that feel like the backrest lines up with their back properly.
While the Mirra 2 is missing one adjustment we look for, it does have one adjustment that we don’t look for, forward seat tilt. This allows you to tilt the seat forward 5° which is great for people that like to lean forward when they work. This upgrade does come at an additional cost.
If forward seat tilt was the only upgrade you received, then I would probably say skip it unless it is crucial to your buying decision. The forward seat tilt add-on also includes Herman Miller’s tilt limiter function. This gives you three different options to limit the amount of recline allowed on the chair.
If you do not upgrade to the tilt limiter, with forward seat tilt, then the chair will still come with tension adjustment but you will not be able to lock it or change the seat angle. The Mirra 2 comes with the rest of the adjustments we look for. This includes seat height and depth adjustments, 4-way adjustable arms, adjustable lumbar support, tilt lock and tilt tension. Not only does it have almost all of the adjustments we look for, but they all have generous ranges.
The Mirra 2 has a nice rocking motion through the recline. It has Herman Miller’s Harmonic 2 tilt mechanism. This mechanism is designed to provide a smooth, balanced recline through the entire range. I think it does its job wonderfully. The motion feels really natural. It is not forced like other chairs and keeps you in an ergonomic position through the entire recline range.
Wheel Options
There are three different caster options on the Mirra 2. The first is standard carpet casters. These are the casters we chose for our chair. They are good quality 2.5” dual wheel casters. They are larger than casters found on a lot of chairs. They are made from nylon and have a uniform black look. They roll smoothly and look nice.
The second caster option is standard hard floor or carpet casters. These casters are very similar to the standard carpet casters. They are the same size, color and material but have a soft tread that makes them usable on hard surfaces like tile, wood and carpeted surfaces.
The final caster option is hard floor or carpet roll-away casters with quiet roll technology. They are the same size and material as the previous two caster options, but they feature a two-tone look, which gives them a different look. These casters work for hard surfaces and carpet, but they feature a braking feature and vibration control. These aspects keep the chairs quiet when in motion and keep the chairs from rolling away unexpectedly.
Upholstery Options
There are only three seat upholstery options on the Mirra 2: Alpine, Dark Turquoise and Graphite. Each color is the same AirWeave 2 mesh. This is a high-end mesh that has good elasticity and low abrasion. Your backrest will match the seat color you choose if you go with the TriFlex or Butterfly backrest.
Finish Options
The Mirra 2 has three different finish options. The first is Graphite. This will give the entire chair a gray look, with the exception of the arm pads and casters, which are black. The next finish option is Silver Alloy with Studio White. This will give you a silver finish on the base, a light grey finish mechanism and arm pads with white on the seat frame and arm frame. The final option is Fog with Studio White. This will also give you a white seat and arm frame with light grey finish arm pads and mechanism. This option also makes the base a light grey finish.
Environmental Focus
Herman Miller has a company wide focus on doing what is right for the environment when it comes to their manufacturing process. They make a strong effort to reduce their environmental impact as much as possible.
The Mirra 2 is made from a total of 92% recycled, post-consumer and pre-consumer content. Almost the entire chair is made from material that may have otherwise gone to waste. The chair is also 93% recyclable.
Herman Miller makes the Mirra 2 in its Greenhouse located in Holland, MI. This is a facility that uses 100% renewable electric energy. Its manufacturing standards has earned them the following environmental certifications: BIFMA level® 3, CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFIED™ Bronze, GREENGUARD Certified, GREENGUARD GOLD Certified.
Even the packaging is made from 95% recycled content. The corrugated cardboard, used for almost the entire package, is also almost entirely recyclable.
What Do I Like?
Great Adjustability
If you are looking for the Herman Miller chair with the most adjustments, then the Mirra 2 is the chair you are searching for. With a lower price point than chairs like the Aeron, Embody and Cosm, the Mirra 2 tops them all in the adjustment category.
Comfortable Armrests
The arms on the Mirra 2 are a real highlight of the chair. The four-way adjustments make them great for tasking. The soft arm pads and natural front slope make them unique and comfortable for long hours.
High-End Build
The Mirra 2 has high quality components and a design that Studio 7.5 put a lot of time and effort into. The parts are made to last and fit very nicely together. The chair is solid, functions smoothly and has a high-end look to it. The chair is expensive, but you can see where your money is going.
Great Warranty

What Don’t I Like?
Higher Price Point
The Mirra 2 is the lowest priced Herman Miller we have tested to date but the way that we configured our chair still puts the price over $1,000. Sure, you can save some money by leaving off some features, but it is still going to be a chair that requires a substantial investment that a lot of people will be unwilling to pay.
Armrest Are Wide
The wide armrests are a pretty big miss for a chair that was designed after a study on anthropometrics and user control. The arms are too far apart for shorter people, even when choosing the fully adjustable arm option.
Mesh Seat is Not Comfortable for Everyone
Mesh seats are not for everyone. They are a unique sitting experience. Some people love the feeling and others prefer a chair with padding. If you have found mesh seats to be uncomfortable in the past, then I would look for an alternative to the Mirra 2.
TriFlex Backrest is Too Hard for Some People
Similar to the mesh seat, the TriFlex back is also not going to be for everyone. It is hard plastic so it is not something that will be comfortable for everyone. The Butterfly back option gives you the ability to add a little padding to the back but still won’t be soft and form fitting like a mesh or padded backrest.
Bottom Line
Like all chairs that we review, the Mirra 2 has some good things going for it but it also has some downsides to consider. The chair comes with a really solid build and is backed by a great warranty. It has a ton of adjustments and a really comfortable set of armrests. You also have the ability to return the chair for a full refund if you decide it is not right for you.
While there are several upsides, there are some factors that may leave you looking elsewhere. The high price tag is the biggest reason. The mesh seat and poly backrest will also be turnoffs for people that do not like these materials on their office chair. I also feel that the wide armrests will pose ergonomic issues for some people. Overall, we really like the Mirra 2. With an overall score of 83/100, it is one of the highest scoring office chairs we have tested. Is it perfect for everyone? No, but it could be a great choice for you.
