Today we will be taking a closer look at a chair that acts as a normal ergonomic office chair, a kneeling chair and a standing desk chair. The Stance Angle is the first chair that we have tested that offers all three of these positions, so I was excited to get an opportunity to take it for a spin.
It is a high-ticket item with a lot of bells and whistles. Is the price tag worth it? Is this the chair that fits my needs? These are some of the questions you may be asking yourself. There is one color option for the Stance Angle chair. It comes in a gray frame with black fabric on the seat, back and knee pads.
Return Policy
HealthPostures will allow you to return the Stance Angle within the first 30 days of owning the chair. You will be responsible for both the return shipping costs and the original outbound shipping costs. Since the chair ships in two large boxes, the shipping charges will be substantial.
The chair must arrive in like new condition or further charges may apply. The chair does not have to be returned in the original packaging, but it is highly recommended to help ensure that it arrives back in good condition.
Warranty
HealthPostures offers five years of warranty coverage on the Stance Angle chair. This covers the entire chair. Five years is on par with other industry leading brands in the standing desk chair category, but it is a bit lacking when compared to other higher-end office chairs.
Shipping
The Stance Angle chair ships within a couple weeks and will arrive on the back of a freight truck. This is the largest and heaviest chair I have ever ordered. It arrives in two large boxes. Each box was too large and too heavy for me to carry on my own. I was able to slide one box across the floor, but I asked for help on the second box. I would recommend having two people available to receive the chair. If you are by yourself, then a dolly would be really helpful.
I found the chair to be well packaged. There were cardboard inserts inside the box to help keep the parts securely in place. Each part was protected by its own plastic bag. I did not find any damage due to shipping and would expect this to be the case with most orders.
Installation
The Stance Angle chair arrives with most of the assembly already done, which is really nice. There is a lot of moving parts with this chair, so having to assemble the mechanisms would have been quite the time investment. The only real assembly required is attaching the armrests, which takes two screws each. From there you just need to pop two wheels into the base, drop the cylinder into the base and then place the entire top of the chair onto the cylinder.
The total assembly time will only take you a few minutes, but I would recommend having someone available to help you. Getting the parts out of the box and placing the chair onto the cylinder will be a tough task for one person because of how heavy the chair is.
Build Quality
This chair is on the top end when it comes to build quality. It is Made in the USA with high-quality components and good craftsmanship. The frame is made from steel and has a powder coat paint finish. The casters are 3” industrial grade casters. The foam on the seat, knee pads and back is thick and soft.
The Stance Angle also has a mechanism that was designed specifically for this chair. The dual motion mechanism has good components, so it operates smoothly and quietly.
Footprint
The Stance Angle has a large footprint. It is about 23”W x 40”D. Compare that to a normal office chair base, which is usually about 27” in diameter, and you can see how much more space the Stance will take up. This will be an issue for people in smaller offices or at small desks. I was able to use the Stance without a problem when typing at the corner section of my desk. I was not able to use it on my desk return, which is 24” deep, because the footrest bumped into my modesty panel. If you are going to use this chair at a desk with a 24”D return, then make sure you do not have a modesty panel, cross support or wall in the way.
Sitting Mobility
The Stance Angle chair has four wheels. The back two wheels swivel in any direction and the front two wheels will move forward and backwards. The wheels help to give the chair some mobility but not having swivel wheels on the front can make it difficult. Moving the entire chair around your desk to reach different areas will not be practical. It simply does not move smoothly enough to make this worthwhile. It is much easier to just get out of the chair and walk to the other section of your desk you need to access.
Making small adjustments in front of your keyboard, to get into a comfortable typing position, is easier than chairs with no wheels. It can still take a bit of time to adjust because you have to move the chair forwards and backwards a few times to move it sideways, because of the lack of swiveling front wheels.
Portability
Simply put, the Stance Angle is not a chair you buy for the portability. This chair is huge and weighs a lot. It is not reasonable to think you are going to use this chair at multiple office locations. The wheels help to make it more mobile around the office, but this is still not a chair that is well suited to be used in multiple different spots in your office. It still takes a bit of effort to roll it around and only having two swivel casters can make it difficult to maneuver.
Seat Comfort
The seat is one of the best things going for the Stance Angle. The seat is basically the opposite of most of the other standing chairs. Instead of being small, firm and uniquely shaped, the seat on the Stance Angle is large, soft and shaped like a typical office chair. It has a good amount of padding to provide good support, but it is still a soft sitting experience. If you are looking for a standing chair with a more typical office chair style seat, then the Stance may be the right chair for you.
Range of Motion
The Stance Angle is not designed to move while you are sitting. It does not have the ability to wobble or for you to lean in different directions, so you are not going to be able to be active while you are sitting on the chair.
While the Stance Angle doesn’t have the ability to keep you moving while seated, it does offer a wide range and variety of positions. It is one of the only standing chairs available that allows you to sit in a normal ergonomic office chair position with your knees, hips and elbows at 90°.
The Stance Angle is also the only standing chair we have tested that can be used as a kneeling chair. It has a wide adjustment range so you can kneel at any angle you’d like.
Along with the normal sitting and kneeling positions, the Stance Angle will also support you while standing, all the way to a full upright position. The Stance Angle is not going to keep you moving while using the chair, but it allows you to switch between many different positions so that you are not locked in the same spot for too long.
Adjusting the Stance Angle
There are a handful of adjustments on the Stance Angle, which was nice to see. The first adjustment is the knee pad depth. The knee pad will move forward and backward so that it fits a wide range of people and will support you in a wide array of positions. There is a button on top of the metal base, in between the knee pad and seat. Pressing the button will unlock the knee pad and allow it to move back and forth. Releasing the button will lock it into position.
The next adjustment will control the seat height for the chair. There is a lever next to the left armrest. When you press and hold the lever, the seat height will be able to be adjusted up or down. You will need to take your weight off the chair, with the lever held down, to move the seat height up. Next, hold the lever and put your weight on the seat to move it down. Then, release the lever to lock the seat in place.
There is a similar lever by the right armrest. Pressing and holding this lever will change the angle between the seat and back. This is the adjustment that allows you to use various standing, kneeling and sitting positions. It functions the same way as the seat height lever. You need to press and hold it down to make adjustments and release to lock it in place.
The final adjustments are for the armrests. There is a button on the outside of each armrest. Pressing and holding the button will allow you to move the arms up or down. The arms can also swivel. Simply grab the arm pad from the top and twist it to a new position.
Ergonomics
The Stance Angle is a chair that doesn’t limit you to one school of thought when it comes to ergonomics. For a long time, an ergonomic office chair has meant a chair that is designed to keep you comfortable in the same position for extended hours. This is usually done by putting all your joints at a 90°.
The Stance Angle can act as a normal ergonomic office chair. One thing to keep in mind when using the chair in a standard position is that there is not going to be much lumbar support, so it is a good idea to only plan on using it in the normal position for limited periods at a time.
Another school of ergonomic thought believes that you should have a more open hip angle which is thought to help promote blood flow, open your diaphragm and relieve pressure on your lower back and hips. This is usually done with a kneeling chair or a perching stool. The Stance Angle can act as both a kneeling chair or a perching chair.
Another thought when it comes to ergonomics is that standing is healthier than sitting. The Stance Angle allows you to work standing fully upright, while also giving you a little support so that not all of your weight is placed on your legs, ankles and feet. One thing to keep in mind when standing is that the seat height does not go high enough for the normal section of the seat to support you. After about 6’0” tall, you will need to sit on the top section of the seat, instead of leaning up against it.
Stability
Stability is not going to be an issue with the Stance Angle. It has a large, heavy base and it is not designed to have you moving around when sitting, kneeling or leaning. I felt very stable in every position I tested, and it was also stable while making adjustments.
Backrest
The backrest is a nice feature, especially since there are so few standing desk chairs that have a backrest. It has soft foam and is well padded throughout the whole backrest. It has a natural curve to help cradle you, but it does not have lumbar support built in. The backrest really helps to keep you comfortable when working for long hours at a time.
Armrests
The Stance Angle has basic T arms. They have height adjustment and the arm caps can also swivel. The arm pads have a soft layer on top and they have a waterfall from edge. I was excited to try the armrests on the Stance Angle because arms are another feature rarely seen on standing chairs. Unfortunately, the arms were quite disappointing for me.
The biggest problem for me was how wide the arms were apart. There is almost 24” between the two arms. This is a similar distance to the largest big and tall chairs we sell on BTOD.com. The distance between the arms on my CXO ergonomic chair is 17”. An extra 7” is a huge difference and it was something that I could not get comfortable with. My elbows were so much wider than my shoulders that it was not a position that could be comfortable for me.
I found the arms to be uncomfortable at kneeling and standing heights too because the arms were too high for me to use, so they would just block my arms in and it made it difficult to use my mouse hand. For me, the best experience would be to just remove the arms and not have them. This is easy to do since they each are assembled with two screws and the chair will function the same way without them.
What Do I Like?
Multiple working positions in one chair
I think the most attractive characteristic on the Stance Angle chair is that is can be used as a normal ergonomic office chair, kneeling chair, leaning chair or full standing height. The Stance Angle combines three chairs into a single product. This makes it very attractive to people looking for numerous sitting options but don’t want multiple chairs.
Made in USA with good build quality
With most standing desk chairs, you pay for what you get. In the case of the Stance Angle, you get a standing chair with top end parts and a high level of technology.
Comfortable seat
The seat is one of the most attractive aspects on the Stance Angle. The standing chair market is filled with chairs that have uncomfortable seats. Having an option that has a large, comfortable seat is nice to see.
Good adjustability
The Stance Angle has a handful of adjustments and a large adjustment range. Most standing chairs only have one adjustment for the seat of the seat and sometimes the range is a limiting factor. The Stance Angle not only has multiple adjustments, but the ranges help to accommodate most people.
Has sitting mobility
The casters used on the Stance Angle are not the best for mobility. I would like to see what the unit is like with four swivel casters instead of just the two. With that said, they are still functional. In a world of chairs with no wheels, the Stance Angle’s wheel system is a welcome feature.
What Don’t I Like?
High price point
Having a price close to $2,000 will be a turn off for a lot of people. Even though it is a high-end product that has several functions, it won’t be affordable for the masses.
Large footprint
The footprint on the Stance Angle is much larger than a standard office chair with 5-star base. This may make it a bad choice for people with small offices or small desks.
Not portable
Because the Stance Angle is designed more like a standard ergonomic office chair than a perching stool, it is not an option for people looking for a portable product. This is a chair that is meant to be assembled in an office and left there.
Arms may be uncomfortable for people under 6’0”
The arms were the biggest disappointment for me. They were too wide and too high, so they were not practical for me to use at any height.
Not a good option for people over 6’3”
The Stance Angle is suitable for about 90-95% of the population but people on the tall end of the spectrum will not be able to use this chair at leaning and standing heights.
Bottom Line
The Stance Angle has a lot of cool features that make it stick out in the crowd of standing desk chairs. This will not be a chair for everyone though. The price will be the first big hurdle, but the large footprint could also be a factor because it will not be compatible with all desk set-ups. The armrests were a real issue for me, and they could also be a factor for other people. I think it is still a good chair without the arms but if armrests are one of your requirements, you may want to look for an alternative product.
While the Stance Angle will not be for everyone, it will be ideal for some. This is a niche product for people that want top quality and multiple functions within a single chair. The Stance Angle is like the home gym system that facilitates five different exercises. It also has one of the most comfortable seats we have seen in the standing chair category and is one of the few standing desk chairs with wheels. If you are interested in being able to change your working positions between several different options and are willing to pay a premium for it, then you should consider the Stance Angle.
