In 2010, Ergotron recognized the demand for a desktop product that could allow users to sit and stand at their current desk. One of the products that they designed was the WorkFit-S. The WorkFit-S has a very unique look, compared to most desktop converters that simply rest on top of your existing desk. The WorkFit-S has been a popular product for us on BTOD.com, so I was excited to get it set-up and put it to use. Here is what I found.

Shipping & Assembly
The WorkFit-S typically ships via FedEx or UPS Ground within a couple days of placing your order. It will arrive within five business days after it ships.
The WorkFit-S has the most set-up time out of all the units I have tested so far. The instructions are easy to follow, but it will take most users upwards of an hour. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver and socket wrench, along with the tools included. Most of the time will be spent assembling the unit and attaching all of the screws. There will be additional time spent customizing the counterbalance system to the overall weight of the items on the unit and the monitor itself. There is a pain point with the monitor set screw, similar to The Duke installation. The screw is difficult to turn because of the small amount of room for your hand behind the monitor.
To adjust the counterbalance for the overall weight of the unit, remove the cap on top of the post to expose the adjustment screw. Turn the screw to the right to increase tension if your unit will not stay up. Turn the screw left to lessen tension if your unit will not lower.
The same type of system is used for the independent monitor adjustment. The adjustment screw can be found at the back of the underside of the work surface. Turn the screw to the right to increase tension for heavier monitors. Turn the screw to the left to lessen tension for lighter monitors.
Note: Using an L shaped Allen wrench is the best tool for installing the set screw.
Initial Impressions
The set-up time for the WorkFit-S is pretty involved, but it may be the most impressive desktop converter I have used so far. I was impressed right off the bat with the nine different keyboard mounting positions and negative keyboard tilt option. The overall design is very sleek and efficient. It looks good while taking up a lot less space than the majority of standing desk converters. After getting settled into the WorkFit-S, it was very apparent that Ergotron spent a lot of time on the details.
One thing that I was a bit worried about was how difficult the adjustment would be with the single handle. After getting the unit set-up with the proper counterbalance, I found that the adjustment on the WorkFit-S is right up there with The Duke as one of the easiest desktop converters to adjust. The adjustment is not only simple, but it is smooth and feels incredibly stable while in motion. Simply grab the metal handle in the middle of the work surface and adjust it up or down. The WorkFit-S will stay in the position you choose after you are done moving it. The monitor works independently in the same way.
The WorkFit-S is also designed in a way that provides a lot of task space without implementing an overlay large work surface. By removing the keyboard tray from the worksurface, Ergotron has made the entire work surface usable for tasking. The work surface provided may not be as large as products like the Winston or Kangaroo, but you have just as much task space because of the separate keyboard tray.
What do I like?
True Ergonomics
The WorkFit-S is one of the only desktop converters that offers a true ergonomic experience for the majority of the population. This stems from the slanted shape of the main post and the 3-tier design.
One of my complaints about products like the Kangaroo is that it feels like you are really close to your monitor. This is not an issue with the WorkFit-S for two reasons. The post is slanted away from you. This means that the monitor is further away than if the post were straight up and down, like many other designs. Additionally, the separate keyboard tray pushes you further back from the monitor. These two aspects provide for a good viewing experience that doesn’t strain your eyes.
The 3-tier design keeps your monitor, worksurface and keyboard tray all separate from each other. This provides a huge range of adjustability so that you can be in the proper ergonomic position while standing or seated.
The keyboard tray itself also goes way beyond any of the other desktop converters tested. For starters, there are nine different mounting positions available during installation. This allows you to have the keyboard closer to the work surface, further from it, or even off-centered if you’d like. The keyboard tray also has a built-in negative tilt function. There are two plastic pieces under the keyboard tray that can be adjusted between standard and negative tilt. This helps to promote a proper typing angle for your wrists.
Note: Ergotron also makes a larger keyboard tray or a corner keyboard tray for the WorkFit-S.
Easy to Adjust
The WorkFit-S is one of the easiest desktop converters to adjust. The adjustment is so smooth and effortless that it can easily be done with one hand. Models like the Winston and Kangaroo will be difficult to get started and then they are much easier once they get moving. That’s not the case with the WorkFit-S. The counterbalance system makes adjustments easy from the very beginning.
One huge positive for the WorkFit-S is the monitor is adjusted the same way as the work surface. This is a big advantage over products like The Duke and Kangaroo since they feature more difficult monitor adjustments.
Stability
The monitor is mounted to the WorkFit-S and the entire unit is clamp mounted to your desk. This provides a high level of overall stability. There is absolutely zero side to side movement or swivel. The unit is incredibly stable while in motion and at standing height.
Good Option for short and tall people
The WorkFit-S is the only standing desk converter I have tested so far that is a good option for short and tall people. The independent monitor adjustment allows the WorkFit-S to be used by people up to 6’1”. For taller users, Ergotron offers a monitor adapter plate for an additional charge that will extend the height an additional 6”.
While there are many units that are suitable for tall people, there are very few that are good for short users. The WorkFit-S is especially good if you are short because the separated keyboard tray allows for you to have the keyboard tray below your normal desk height. This allows you to maintain an ergonomic position without having to raise your chair to an uncomfortable height.
Large Task Space
I think having an adequate amount of task space is crucial to having a positive standing desk experience. The WorkFit-S does a great job of providing usable space. I liked not having to dedicate a portion of my work surface to my monitor or keyboard tray like other models. This allowed me to have plenty of room for anything I wanted readily available, which included a notepad.
What I don’t like?
Keyboard Bounce
While the overall stability of the WorkFit-S is great, the keyboard bounce could be better. This unit has more keyboard bounce than almost any other unit tested thus far. This is for two reasons.
The first reason is that the keyboard is quite a bit further from the main post, as compared to other units. This creates a little less support all the way to the end of the keyboard tray. The second reason is the thin material used on the keyboard tray. The material is only ¼” thick, so it will naturally vibrate more than other products.
Note: Periodically make sure that the keyboard tray screws are tight. This will help to reduce bounce.
Tedious Assembly
The assembly on the WorkFit-S is very involved. Ergotron does not make the effort to put as much of the unit together as possible prior to shipment. This is a downside when compared to models, like the Varidesk that come ready to go out of the box. This will be a deal breaker for people that don’t want to complete their own installation.
Small Keyboard Space
The WorkFit-S has a keyboard platform that is on the smaller side for standing desk converters. If you plan to use a large keyboard or mouse, then this may not be the best option.
Bottom Line
The WorkFit-S is a fantastic product but it won’t be perfect for everybody. The installation is a time commitment a lot of people won’t want to deal with. The keyboard bounce is something that may be an annoyance if you type aggressively. The WorkFit-S is also not ideal for price conscious shoppers.
In the end, I think this is one of the best standing desk converters I have tested thus far. It provides a true ergonomic experience, with a large amount of work space. This is a great product for people that want to keep their existing desk, but want a very high quality standing desk converter. The adjustment ranges are large and can be done within a few seconds, which make the WorkFit-S a solid option for shared work areas. Overall, the WorkFit-S is a product that I will be confident recommending to our customers.
