If you do a Google search for kneeling chairs, you will find that there are a ton of different options available. Most of the models being sold are low end models that are being imported from China. Many of them look similar and they are often priced below $100.00.
It can be tough to determine if any of these low-priced models will be suited for your needs. The chair we are reviewing today falls into this category. The Boss B248 is one of the lowest priced kneeling chairs available. It has some good things going for it but there are also some major downsides that steer people to a different direction.
In this review, I will cover all aspects of the B248. I will go over all the things that I liked and what I think will be potential deal breakers. In the end, I want you to be able to easily decide if the B248 is a good choice for your new kneeling chair.

Boss does not sell directly to the public. Instead, they sell through a network of authorized dealers and wholesalers. The return policy for your B248 chair will depend on the seller you make your purchase from.

Warranty
Boss covers the B248 with a six year limited warranty. The frame is warranted to be free from manufacturing defects for six years. The fabric, foam, casters, cylinder and mechanism are all covered for two years. This warranty is only valid for the original purchaser.
Shipping
Boss typically ships orders within a few business days of placing your order. It will then ship FedEx or UPS ground and will arrive a few days after it ships. The B248 arrives in a small box that weighs 20 lbs. I found the box to be easy to carry on my own and I think that will be the case for most people.
Installation
The B248 arrives ready to assemble. You will need a phillips head screwdriver to complete the installation. You only need to install the casters and then a handful of screws. The process is simple and should take most people around 10-15 minutes.
Build Quality
The B248 features an x base design. The frame is made from tubular steel. The frame feels strong, but it looks to be low quality. There are quite a few blemishes in the paint finish and the frame is a bit crooked.
The base has four wheels. The wheels are basic 2” casters that are best suited for low pile carpets. The B248 features pneumatic seat height adjustment. The gas cylinder that powers the seat height adjustment is quite small. It reminds me of the gas cylinders on many of the standing desk converters I’ve tested. It is much smaller than the cylinders you find on normal office chairs, so I question how long it will last.
The fabric is made from a commercial grade linen. It features a basic design pattern but that is more than most kneeling chairs offer. The fabric is not that soft to the touch, but it isn’t coarse either. The foam padding used seems to be lower quality because it is not consistent throughout. It holds its position fairly well but will eventually bottom.
Mobility While Seated
The casters on the B248 are very basic. I found that they rolled most of the time. Having wheels makes a huge difference in giving you mobility around your desk and office. They allow you to easily get to areas that are normally out of your reach. They also make typing more comfortable because it is easy to move very small amounts to get into the perfect position. This is not as easy on models with sled-based designs.
The wheels on the B248 do help but they do not always work and they will sometimes drag. I found this to be the case when on smooth surfaces like wood or concrete. On our low pile carpet, they function pretty well but sometimes they do not swivel properly. Overall, these wheels are the best among the low priced kneeling chair I have tested but they still have some flaws.
Portability
The B248 has good portability. It weighs less than 20 pounds and has a compact design. I was able to carry it around pretty easily with one hand by holding onto the backside of the seat. If you don’t want to carry it, then rolling it is always an option. Either method gives you the ability to easily move the chair around your office.
Range of Motion
One area that he B248 tested very poorly in was range of motion. This refers to your ability to move your body while sitting in your chair. Unlike sled-based models, like the Variable™ Balans®, the metal x base on the B248 does not allow for any motion. There is not an ability to rock and the frame does not bend or flex at all. You are locked in the same position while using the B248.
Making Adjustments
The only adjustment on the B248 is pneumatic seat height adjustment. There is a lever underneath the right side of the seat. Pulling and holding the lever will unlock the gas cylinder. If you are sitting on the seat, then your weight will push the cylinder down and lower the seat.
If you hold the lever and remove your weight from the seat, the gas cylinder will push the seat up and raise the height. Releasing the lever will lock the seat into the new position.
It is important to note that when you change the height of the seat, you are also changing the angle. When the seat is at tall heights, it will have more of an incline than when at lower heights.
One thing to watch out for is hitting the seat height adjustment lever with your leg. When testing the chair, I hit it a couple times with my leg and had a sudden drop of seat height.
Seat Comfort
The seat on the B248 is smaller than the seats you find on normal office chairs. It is about 16”W x 12”D, so not everyone will fit comfortably on the seat of the B248. The seat has a thin layer of padding, but I found it to be more comfortable than similar priced models with overly thick cushions.
I did not have problems with becoming warm like the models with thick cushions. I was comfortable on the seat for 60-90 minutes before the cushion would start to bottom out.
Knee/Shin Comfort
I found the knee pads on the B248 to be the most comfortable option, after the two Varier chairs. The padding and fabric are the same as the seat. Just like the seat options, there are a lot of lower end models that have overly thick padding to make up for the poor quality.
The thick padding will bottom out after a short time and then it feels like you have leg warmers on. You will not have this experience with the B248.
The B248 is like a lot of models that have a single piece for the knee pads, unlike models that have two separate pads for each leg. The biggest problem I have found with the single pad system is that they are often too small to fit your legs comfortably. I did not find this to be a problem with the B248.
Another problem with some lower end models is that sometimes they slope downward on the outsides, which makes it feel like your legs are sliding off the sides. The knee pad on the B248 has outside edges that are slightly upward. This keeps your legs in place.
Ergonomics
Kneeling chairs follow a different ergonomic principle than most ergonomic office chairs. They were developed as a means to reduce the pressure on your tailbone and lower back. The B248 follows this same design principle, with a forward sloping seat and knee pads to help take the pressure off your butt.
The seat height adjustment allows you to change the angle of the seat for different styles of kneeling. The tallest seat height felt like my weight was being split evenly between the seat and knee pads. At the lowest seat height, almost all of my weight was on the seat. There should be a wide enough seat height range to accommodate most people’s preferences.
I found the chair to be comfortable for about 60 minutes before I started to feel like I needed to move. Being locked in the same kneeling position, without the ability to move, rock, wiggle or fidget, makes it tough to use the chair for extended periods of time.
What Do I Like?
Good warranty
The B248 comes with a solid warranty for the price you are paying. You have two years of coverage on all the components, with six years of coverage on the frame. This helps to temper my concerns with the low end build quality.
Pneumatic seat height adjustment
I was surprised to see the B248 had pneumatic seat height adjustment. The other low-end models have hand screw mechanisms to change the seat height. These are more time consuming and take more effort than simply using the lever and gas cylinder on the B248.
Good portability
The wheels and lightweight design make the B248 a good kneeling chair for mobility. It is easy to carry or wheel around. This may be a nice option for people that need to use their kneeling chair in multiple areas or for offices that have a few different people that like to use a kneeling chair periodically.
What Don’t I Like?
Low end build quality
One major concern for me is the build quality on the B248. All the components are low end and the gas lift cylinder is something I think could be a potential problem. I have never seen a cylinder so small on a chair that is rated for 275 pounds.
The low-end parts may mean that you are needing to use your warranty. The good thing is that all the parts are covered for at least two years. If you are the type of person that would prefer not to replace parts under warranty, then you probably want to look for a higher quality product.
No range of motion
The biggest downside for me, while using the chair, was the lack of any range of motion. Even my regular office chair gives me enough freedom to move my legs around. I can change my position to alleviate pressure on one area if I start to get uncomfortable. That was not an option while using the B248. Once in position, I was stuck there for the duration of my sit.
Not good for extended periods
The B248 is not a chair that I would recommend for people that need something for longer than an hour or so at a time. I touched on the lack of range of motion, but the seat and knee pads are also not built to be comfortable for extended hours. If you need a kneeling chair for longer hours, then I would highly recommend a model with a sled-based design, like the Variable™ Balans®.
Bottom Line
The Boss B248 ranked #4 on my list of the best kneeling chair list. This put it as the highest ranked kneeling chair that was under $250 and it can currently be purchased for a rock bottom price of $75.71. The B248 has some glaring weaknesses but the price is hard to ignore. This is not a chair that I would recommend to people that want something high quality to use on a daily basis for a good chunk of their day.
But, I do think this can be a nice option for people that just want another seating option to mix into their day. I also think this chair should be considered by people that want to try a kneeling chair to see if they like it but don’t want to invest a few hundred dollars right away.
