1. Design of the Seat Pans
Both the Lamia and Ameap chairs have seat pans that are formed from internal seat pan shells known as the Leap and Amia. However, there is a key difference in the curve of the seat pans. The curve of the Leap chair’s seat pan is more pronounced, creating a “hug” type fit. Depending on your body, this curve can lead to some discomfort over time. Personally, I don’t enjoy the leap seat because of my slouching habit.

On the other hand, the Amia chair has a more flat seat pan design, which can be a more comfortable option for those who prefer a flatter surface. Both seats have added flexibility to their front edge, which helps reduce pressure on the back sides of your legs. The original Leap seat pan has more flexibility due to the design of its outer shell making the Ameap a better option. The Amia seat pan is slightly stiffer.

Additionally, both the Lamia and Ameap chairs come with similar seat adjustments, including height adjustment and seat depth adjustment. The levers for these adjustments are in the same locations on the seat and function the same way. This means that you can easily customize the chair to fit your body and sitting preferences.
2. The Better Recline Experience
The biggest difference between the two chairs is how they recline. The Lamia chair comes with a five-position tilt limiter function, allowing you to select one of five different positions to limit the chair’s recline. This feature, paired with the tilt tension adjustment, provides a wide range of options for using the tilt feature.

The Ameap chair has a more basic recline mechanism, with just an upright tilt lock or a freely reclining feature. To use the Ameap in different positions of tilt, I like to increase the tilt tension to settle into different ranges of tilt positions. It’s important to note that neither chair is ideal for rocking back and forth, as the design of the recline features creates friction in the glides.
3. Supporting Your Spine
Switching to the backrest designs now, the Lamia and Ameap chairs are quite different. The Lamia backrest stands taller, making it a better option for taller users. If you’re 6’3″ or taller, the backrest on the Ameap chair may be too short and potentially hit your shoulder blades. If you’re shorter, the Ameap chair is likely to be a good fit. The flexibility in each backrest is also different. The Lamia backrest is more flexible, allowing for intentional movement and stretching.

The Ameap backrest has more structure, providing less overall flexibility but still moving with you nicely. If you prefer less aggressive lower support, the Ameap chair is the preferred option. The Lamia chair has a live back technology that creates a supportive solution in the backrest. This features the ability to increase or decrease the amount of lumbar support. Some may find the height-adjustable lumbar too aggressive and choose to remove it for more comfort.
4. Armrest Comfort
Next, the Lamia and Ameap chairs share the same four-way adjustable arm package for their armrests. For me, these armrests are considered to be one of the best sets made to date. They offer just the right amount of softness with no hard edges and include a wide range of adjustments, including height, depth, width and pivot adjustments. The armrests provide excellent support and customization options for your arms and shoulders.

Bottom Line
Overall, both the Lamia and Ameap chairs offer unique sitting experiences with their swapped seat pans. The Lamia chair is the higher-priced option but offers a flatter seat design whereas the Ameap chair provides a less aggressive lumbar and is only available when Lamia chairs are sold on BTOD.com. Take your time and choose the best chair for you.

I just purchased a Lamia from BTOD.com after researching chairs for the past year and a half. I spend more time in my home office than ever before, and the cheap second-hand chair I bought from a neighbor just isn’t cutting it any longer. I appreciate BTOD’s Youtube content and the transparency in their refurbishing process. I can’t wait for my new chair!
