OFM Inc is a company that we have worked with for almost a decade now. One of the main reasons we chose to add their product line to our website is because of products like the 247-VAM. I recently spent about a week using the 247-VAM. I wanted to learn why this has been such a popular choice with many of our customers and why it may not be so great for others. Here is what I found.

OFM Inc History
OFM Inc is a family-owned furniture company that has been doing business since 1995. OFM is an import furniture company, sourcing their furniture from China, Taiwan and Mexico. Their focus is on providing affordable products that ship quickly. They do not have a large upholstery or finish selection because everything that they sell is stocked and ready to ship within a couple of business days. Something that I feel sets them apart from other import manufacturers is their reliable product line, few backorders and almost no discontinued products.

The 247-VAM is only available in anti-microbial/anti-bacterial vinyl. There are four colors to choose from: wine, charcoal, navy and black. This upholstery is not pretty or soft to the touch like leather is. It also lacks the color and design selection you may find on higher priced 24/7 models, but, it is very functional. The anti-microbial/anti-bacterial characteristics on the vinyl can be tough to find on any chair, no matter the quality and it will almost always be a substantial upcharge. The vinyl is commercial grade so it is very easy to clean and durable for rough 24 hour environments.
Note: If you prefer fabric upholstery instead of vinyl, then see the OFM-247.

Delivery and Assembly
The standard lead time for the 247-VAM is between 1-3 business days. Standard delivery for a small order, typically five chairs or less, will be via FedEx ground. FedEx ground deliveries will be brought into your office or to the door. If you are placing a larger order, then it will most likely ship LTL on a semi-truck. This type of delivery will be made to a loading dock or the nearest curb. If you need the order brought inside, then contact your authorized dealer prior to ordering so that proper arrangements can be made.
The 247-VAM arrives knocked down and ready-to-assemble. The assembly on the 247-VAM will be quite involved compared to other 24 hour chairs. Almost everything on the chair needs to be assembled. I would estimate the time for assembly to be between 30-60 minutes for the average person.

OFM 247 VAM Warranty
OFM offers a limited lifetime warranty on the 247-VAM. The warranty will only be valid to the original purchaser and it must be purchased from an authorized dealer. If it is determined that replacement parts are needed, then OFM will ship the necessary parts to you for no charge. It will be your responsibility to make the necessary replacements. If your chair repairs are too complicated to be done on your own, then you will need to pay to ship the chair to OFM so that they can complete the repairs at their factory. The shipping back to you will also be your responsibility.

247 VAM Pricing
The 247-VAM is one of the lowest priced dispatch chairs available. It has a manufacturer’s list price of $768.00 and can usually be found for somewhere in the $300-$400 range from authorized dealers online. The limited color selection lets OFMs order pre-upholstered seats and chair backs in bulk, giving them a better price on the parts. This reduces the price on the chair. The combination of low cost import parts and the lack of any pre-assembly on the chair are the main factors that keep the price so low.
What do I like?
The price on the 247-VAM is probably what I like most about the chair. Shopping for 24/7 or big and tall chairs, for under $500, can be a bit risky because there are quite a few sub par products out there being pawned off for intensive use. They will often have cheap, flimsy parts and extremely short warranties. The 247-VAM is manufactured by a very reliable company and the design has been available for a long time, which gives the chair a lot of credibility. The combination of manufacturer reliability, adjustability and strong warranty make this chair an incredibly good value.
The adjustability on the 247-VAM compares to chairs that are far more expensive. The chair has almost every adjustment possible, including back angle adjustment. This creates an incredibly large spectrum of users that can use this chair. This is one of the few chairs that can be small enough to accommodate petite users and large enough to accommodate big and tall users. The only way to fully illustrate this huge size range is by showing you. Check out the size disparity in these two pictures below:
The 247-VAM arms are soft to the touch and have a unique front sloping feature that I found to be very comfortable on my mousing arm. It allowed my wrist to naturally drop from the armrest, instead of being held up by a rigid arm pad.
I was also extremely impressed with how much the arms adjusted. They are width adjustable by unscrewing a knob under the seat to release them. The knob needs to be re-screwed in to tighten them and lock them back in place after adjusting. I found this process to be a bit annoying but the range of width adjustment was impressive. The arms are also height adjustable, with arm caps that swivel and adjust front to back. The arms on this chair are just as comfortable, if not more, than high-end ergonomic chair brands.
Note: The ratchet system used on the height adjustment for the arms is very loose. This makes them easy to move out of position by simply grabbing them to re-adjust your position while seated, or when trying to move the whole chair.
The warranty OFM Inc provides on the 247-VAM really shows the confidence in their product quality. Most 24/7 chair manufacturers have warranties for around 5-10 years, with components being covered for 2-5 years. OFM Inc goes well beyond that by covering the chair for a lifetime, with the only exclusion being the cylinder, which is still covered for 7 years.
Yes, it limits the upholstery coverage to only 2 years but this is not a huge concern for me because of the commercial grade vinyl that comes standard on the chair. The vinyl is designed to be durable enough for harsh environments, which is why OFM chose it for their 24/7 chair.
They do not offer free repairs if the customer can’t do replacements on their own. The way that the chair is designed makes it so that almost every part can easily be replaced by the user.
What are my concerns?
Vinyl gets very warm
One thing that I noticed very quickly after starting to use the 247-VAM was how warm my back and legs became, due to the vinyl upholstery. I was forced to get up and out of my seat about every half hour to ensure that my back and legs did not begin to get sweaty. This is not something that I have experienced in other chairs that I have used for extended periods of time.
Backrest could use better lumbar support
I am not a fan of the backrest used on the 247-VAM. There is no lumbar support on the chair, which meant that I was adjusting in my seat a lot, trying to force myself to sit in the correct posture. Higher-end chairs will put you in the correct seating posture automatically, but you will need to remind yourself periodically to sit up straight when using the 247-VAM.
The concave shape of the backrest is another feature that I am not fond of. My shoulders felt like they were being pushed forward when I was up against the backrest. I found myself sitting up, perched pretty often, in an attempt to avoid the backrest pushing on my shoulders.
Lack of vinyl color options
The color choices for the 247-VAM are very limited and a bit outdated. If you are looking for a colorful option or something with a pattern, then this isn’t going to be a good chair for you. The upholstery on the 247-VAM is purely functional, so I recommend limiting expectations with regard to the vinyl looking or feeling nice.
For a big and tall dispatch chair with such a low price, there are not many downsides to the 247-VAM. This is a fantastic option for customers looking to buy multiple chairs that are going to be used throughout the day by several different people. This is also a nice, affordable alternative for customers looking to buy a leather 24/7 task chair, but don’t want the high price tag that typically comes with it. Yes, the backrest could use a complete overhaul and the vinyl is going to be warmer than other upholsteries, but, the adjustability and warranty are right up there with top of the line dispatch chairs. I think this is a great option if you’re looking for a 24-hour chair for under $500.
